The co-operative Wind Bands are based in Sandbach, Cheshire and have been set up to give young brass, woodwind and percussion players the opportunity of playing together as an ensemble.
There are four bands in the organisation:
The Starter Group for children who have just started playing and know just a few notes.
The stater group rehearses on a Monday evening from 6.00 pm until 6.45 pm.
The Beginner Band, which accepts players with a knowledge of a few notes and teaches them basic skills to be able to play in concerts at various times in the year. The Beginner Band rehearsals are on Monday evening from 6.45 p.m. untill 7.45 p.m. (term time only).
The Junior Band, which aims to develop skills further so as to be part of a larger ensemble that takes part in Festivals, competitions and plays at Concerts and events throughout the year.
The Junior Band rehearsals are on Saturday morning from 8.45 a.m. untill 10.15 a.m. (term time only).
The Youth Band that performs joint concerts with brass bands, choirs and takes part in many events. It also competes against bands in national competitions and at Music Festivals.
The Youth Band rehearsals are on Saturday morning from 10.30 a.m. untill 12.00 a.m. (term time only).
The three bands are very successful in their own way and all the players are pleased to be part of the organisation.
The musical director of the organisation is Emma Clark BMus (Hons,) RNCM PGCE NPQH. Having attended Wistaston Church Lane and Shavington High School, Emma studied tuba at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester under James Gourlay, Brian Kingsley and Andrew Duncan.
Emma has played with many of the top brass bands, including Wingates, Besses’o the Barn Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and appeared at many of the world’s top concert venues. Emma is also headteacher at Elworth Hall Primary School, Sandbach
Up until December 2011, the youth band and latterly the junior and beginner bands were supported by the co-operative group, but a change in national policy ended this support. However, the bands are determined to continue by becoming a self supporting group through concerts, events and fund raising activities carried out by the bands and their supporters.
The youth, junior and beginner bands made a CD in October 2010 entitled “The Eye of The Tiger" and followed this with their second CD in October 2013, entitled “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. In June 2015, the bands made their third individual CD entitled "Memories". This was made possible by a L.M.T (Love Music Trust) grant and a large donation from the Rhodes family in memory of Winifred Rhodes.
The youth and junior bands previously made two CD’s with the United Co-op Band Crewe (now called the Funeralcare Band).
All bands rehearse in a fantastic bandroom in G8way2 at Sandbach High School, Sandbach.
